Trainer Jeri Freels, known for her horsemanship and developing the skills of hunter/jumper riders, died last weekend.
She and her husband, Bob Freels, who had worked for the legendary Bertalan de Nemethy at the U.S. Equestrian Team, founded Harkaway Farm in the 1950s in Greenwich, Conn. Now located in Brewster, N.Y., Harkaway continues to be run by Jeri’s family, daughters Tracy Freels and Susie Isop, and Jeri’s granddaughter, Hannah Isop.
All the girls were brought up to take care of their horses and enjoy them, as well as competing at the highest level. The horses themselves were more important than winning. They always came first, and the work involved was a priority before riding.
In addition to Tracy, Susie and Hannah, Jeri is survived by two other grandchildren, Dustin and Sara.
