EHV neurologic case found in Florida

A single case of neurologic equine herpes virus (EHV-1) has been confirmed in Hillsborough County, Fla.

At this point, no other confirmed or suspect cases have been identified, according to the Equine Disease and Communications Center.

The affected animal, a thoroughbred racehorse originating from Tampa Bay Downs, is undergoing treatment in an isolation facility. The index case affected barn and epidemiological linked barn at Tampa Bay Downs have been quarantined and the remainder of the facility is under increased disease surveillance at the direction of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The affected horse had been on-site at Tampa Bay Downs since late October, with no known connections to the ongoing U.S. EHM (neurologic) outbreak that began in Texas in Western performance horses.
