Even though the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is more than 2 1/2 years away, it’s never too early to think about going to the Games and circling the dates.
Equestrian competition, one of 31 sports on the program, will be held from July 14, the day of the opening ceremonies, through July 29, the day before the closing ceremonies.
There will be three non-competition days, which allows for changes of weather or if other situations require them at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, a racetrack close to Los Angeles.

Eventing dressage starts the day after the horse inspection and runs July 15-16. Cross-country is July 17, held on site. That’s unlike the case at the 1984 Olympics, when cross-country was the only segment not held at Santa Anita, but was staged further south, closer to San Diego. Eventing show jumping and medal presentations will be July 18, the same day as the grand prix dressage horse inspection.
The dressage Grand Prix will be July 20- 21 July, followed by the Grand Prix Special, the team final, on July 22. July 23 has only the second inspections for show jumping and dressage on the schedule. The Dressage freestyle and individual medals in that discipline are set for July 24.
The team qualifier in show jumping is July 25, with the team final planned the next day. The second Jumping horse inspection and re-inspection will be July 27, with the Jumping Individual Qualifier July 28. The Jumping Individual final is July 29 on “Super Saturday,” when there will be 26 medal sessions across 23 sports.
LA28 will be the largest Olympics of all time, with 51 sports. Equestrian has 200 quota places. How many countries will qualify for equestrian remains to be seen, but there were 30 at the 1984 Games. The participation record in terms of the number of nations was 50 in Tokyo 2021. The total for Paris last year was 49.
Rather than buying a ticket when they go on sale in January, you can be part of the 2028 Olympics by volunteering, if you are 18 or older. The program, presented by Delta Air Lines, offers an opportunity for everyone to take a role. The 1984 Los Angeles Olympics was amazing, and its successor 44 years later promises to be equally as memorable.
